Beatle John Lennon and his performance artist bride Yoko Ono continued their experimental recordings with “Wedding Album,” their third album of avant-garde sounds. The album was intended to celebrate/chronicle their well publicized courtship, jet setting, and “Bed-In For Peace” staged during their March 1969 honeymoon. Never ones to shy away from publicity the pair recognized that their honeymoon would be of interested to reporters so they invited media from around the world into their honeymoon suite and conducted around the clock interviews. | “ | I’ll keep this short and simple: Buy it for both. This is world-class superb playing from Cleveland. Maazel’s renderings are personal and viable. Both of these are studied, thoughtful, vibrant performances. The Tchaikovsky has jaw-dropping execution in the Finale. It is difficult to believe that such articulation and clarity is possible at Maazel’s tempo! Not all re-issues are worth buying: this one truly is.
In addition, this disc again demonstrates that Telarc’s early digital technique was amazing. The sound spectrum is smooth and captures every subtlety and nuance of dynamics and color by the instrumentalists. The sound field is very broad and smooth with startling depth. Jack Renner had the finest ear for recorded sound in the industry. Thankfully his work allowed him to be a legend in his own time. All those Grammy’s for technical excellence were for a reason! Now that the new owners have stopped all production and killed off Telarc, you should be buying these discs while you can still get them. Highly recommended for long-time listening. Robert L. Kubelik became acquainted with Mahler’s music as a young man, inspired by the work of Bruno Walter, Erich Kleiber and Fritz Busch. He was fascinated from the start by its capacity for passion and sacrifice and its shrewd foreboding, but also as a compatriot by its Bohemian-Moravian roots. Until the 1960’s Mahler was still considered an eccentric outsider whose music was grudgingly performed from time to time. It was Kubelik’s dedication to radio-broadcasting which instigated the revival of Mahler’s work, culminating in Kubelik being the first conductor ever to perform a complete Mahler cycle, which took place in Munich.
